Julia Rousakis has a decade of experience developing projects that bring together nature, history, science, and fun. She has consulted on diverse environments for play and learning including Eco.Experience at the Carnegie Science Center, Discover Liberty! at the Statue of Liberty, and PlayLab—a project to foster everyday science learning through play. With Jane Clark Chermayeff & Associates, Julia facilitated the 2013 symposium “Child in the City of Play,” an interdisciplinary exploration of play in urban environments organized with the Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the exhibition Center of the Child: Growing by Design 1900-2000.
In 2010 she helped launch Architectural Playground Equipment with Jane Clark Chermayeff. As an emerging leader in both play advocacy and playground planning, APE is working to change the landscape of play in America to make play better for everyone. APE projects include the Science Playground at the New York Hall of Science, Pier 6 playground at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Children’s Adventure Garden at the Morton Arboretum and Shelby Farms Park Woodland Discovery Playground in Memphis. APE’s latest project is Maggie Daley Park, which just opened across from Millennium Park in Chicago.
Julia came to play through an interest in visitor experiences at museums. Prior to joining JCC&A in 2004, she was an award-winning journalist and writer for museums, covering topics that range from volcanoes and forest fires to Egyptian art and the design of the Freedom Tower. Julia received both a B.A. in Middle East Studies and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
