KEYNOTE: The Day the Universe Changed (10:00am - 10:45am)

Xilam Bayfront

How 2016/2017 turned Gen Z’s emotional landscape upside down, and the doors it opens for more emotionally relevant media platforms and content

For the last 10 years, US research firm The Family Room has been mapping the shifting emotional landscape of Gen Z youth. And for the first eight, these core hopes, fears, dreams and anxieties remained remarkably constant. And then came 2016, which triggered the start of some astonishing shifts in the Passion Points Gen Z kids and teens are most focused on, leading to implications for the kids media industry that cannot be overstated. In this kick-off keynote, TED Talk speaker and Family Room CEO George Carey will track these shifts in Gen Z’s emotional landscape, exploring how they will impact the where, how and what of youth media consumption, and recommending strategies for kids media players to reflect this new reality and elevate the emotional relevance of their properties and platforms with today’s kids and teens

Screen Disruptor-The Rise of Children’s Podcasts (2:00pm - 2:45pm)

Sevilla

With US children spending an average of 48 minutes a day on mobile devices, the definition of “family dynamics” has shifted to include more time spent by individuals immersed in their own screens. But what if the pendulum swung back to a time when media was consumed by the whole family as a unit? Well, that may be happening already. Responding to a growing demand for kid-friendly podcasts over the last year, producers in this space are offering families a welcome alternative to screen time. Listen in as this group of award-winning podcast creators they talk business models, creative and production processes and benefits.

COPPA compliance, Europe's GDPR and recent class-action lawsuits are increasing fears about offering web or mobile content for kids, especially when personal data is involved. And then there are the complexities of working with third-party providers who may be operating data-collection functions on your behalf (i.e. analytics, advertising, voice/facial recognition). Top privacy expert Shai Samet gives a tutorial on what steps IP owners need to take now to help protect their brands and avoid the threat of litigation in the future.

With the looming launch of Disney's proprietary SVOD and the seemingly unstoppable rise of services like Netflix and Amazon, it’s worth exploring what the kids "network" of the future can, could and should be. A new type of star will be driving it, with new platforms inspiring the invention of new formats, release patterns, marketing strategies and revenue models. Experimentation is already taking place on these fronts, but early efforts have yet to settle into any sort of consensus. What does the grand design look like? Is there one? Pioneering Pubcasters in the Brave New World of VOD (10:15am - 11:00am)

Sevilla

Traditional public broadcasters have faced the challenges of an ever-evolving “view-niverse” and a much more voracious kid appetite for content head-on with the launch of their own age-appropriate VOD and streaming platforms, groundbreaking formats and programming. Notably in Scandinavia, they’re putting more and more resources into their VOD platforms—sometimes championing them over linear. So far, the results are showing terrific benefits for both the broadcasters and their audiences, but these offerings are creating complications for content creators and distributors in terms of commercial viability and exposure. The future is now, but what does it look like from the perspective of all parties involved?

We Need to Talk About YouTube: Building launch plans around the all-important AVOD channel (10:00am - 11:00am)

One of the biggest burning questions for kids producers and content owners right now is whether or not market-leader YouTube, and other digital platforms like Twitch and Facebook, should be viewed as marketing or money-making platforms. Can they actually be both? Is there good business in launching a brand exclusively on the world's largest VOD platform, and if so, what does the P&L look like? We've assembled a panel of experts working in the space to answer these questions and much more. They’ll also examine the challenges—like smaller production budgets, monetization and managing a direct relationship with your audience—that come with the necessity of making YouTube and others like it a key part of a kid-targeted IP's brand plan

Helping kids cope with trauma (10:00am - 11:00am)

Traumatic experiences and the stress they cause can disrupt a child’s brain development and increase the risk of both short-term and long-term physical, social and emotional issues. This panel poses the question: As media producers, what responsibility do we have to address and create resources to mitigate the impact of traumatic experiences on young children?

Creating Convincing Teen Dramas (4:15pm - 5:00pm)

Sevilla

With the BBC’s announcement that it will be leaning into content for 12 to 16s, and platforms like Netflix enthusiastically mining the YA genre, kids producers are looking at the demo with new interest. But producing for this adjacent audience who watch adult and alternative content can be challenging. How do we  engage and entertain young teens, offering them content that delivers dramatic twists and psychological tension without veering into the adult lane? Where do we draw the lines on relationships, substances, and so much more?  We've assembled a diverse panel of producers actively working in the space to share experiences, best practices and (most fun) an example of a scene they feel they either "nailed" or failed" for teens.

How Open Are Children to Diversity? New learnings from emotion-recognition software (10:00am - 10:45am)

Sevilla

Unscripted live-action programming is a highly empowering genre that literally gives children a voice in media. But how much do young children engage with live-action content as viewers, and to what level do they embrace diversity on-screen? This pioneering study set out to answer these questions using facial-recognition software. The cutting-edge technology reveals kids’ emotional reactions to what they’re watching second by second, without the bias of traditional interview methods that are typically used with young viewers. Surprising results came to light, including the discovery that live-action programming supports the development of empathy and emotional intelligence in young viewers more than previously believed.

CLOSING KEYNOTE: Kids of the World - the impact of fast-paced global change on kids right now (11:00am - 12:00pm)

Xilam Bayfront

Viacom Global Consumer Insights SVP Christian Kurz is unveiling the results of the international media company's exciting new Kids of the World study at Kidscreen Summit. Viacom, home of renowned kidsnet Nickelodeon,  surveyed roughly 6,000 six- to 11-year-olds from 31 countries, delving into how our fast-paced and ever-changing world is shaping kids’ attitudes, experiences and behaviors. Speaking directly to kids, not their parents and caregivers, the study reflects their unvarnished perspectives and voices. What’s emerging is a portrait of a group of fearless kids that’s growing up aware of uncertainty and change, but ready to embrace the countless possibilities ahead of them. Now it’s up to you to figure out how to entertain them.
